Whoever thought lawyers are only comfortable in Court rooms is wrong. This morning, GSF partnered with H&G Advocates and reached out to the elderly beneficiaries in Katabi Town Council - Entebbe. These are the primary care-givers of the children under GSF' Education Aid Programme (EAP).
One would expect that in the evening of their years, these elderly people should take it slow and enjoy life, but no. These particular elderly people (representative of many in this part of the world) are raising another generation after raising their own children. This comes with unique challenges, least of which is the fact that they are not working anymore and can therefore not afford to pay tuition or meet their grand children's needs. The grannys shared their challenges with us and it was heart-wrenching to hear what they go through.
Old-age can be very lonely! The widowers amongst them shared how life became very hard when they wives passed on. Health challenges coupled with poverty were a common story. Thanks to H&G Advocates, each granny went home with a gift hamper (including sugar, soap, rice, etc) and had a medical check-up done. Having breakfast together and simply sharing their stories was the highlight of the day.
